It’s no surprise that since I started college 3 years ago, with my mostly sedentary lifestyle, I’ve gained 20lbs. My dad, a Type-2 diabetic, has steadily lost weight since he started some meatless UnAmerican diet of some witchcraft and brags about it. And has even poked fun at me for my weight gain. Not anymore.
Today, I’m putting on my war face and I’m on a mission:
to lose 20lbs in 6-8 weeks by any and all means necessary
, to not only be much healthier, look even better than I do now, but to rub it in his face when I lose more weight than he does, muahahahahaha!!!!
He’s relit the atomic fire of war in me, and this time it shall not be quelled by anything other than victory.
By Christmas time, I’m going to look better than anyone in my family ever has. Just you watch. I’ll be as sexy as any Hollywood actor who ever lived and forever. Nothing will stop me this time or ever.

If you want to keep it off, do it gently with a (mild) life style change. Crash diets and excessive exercising don’t tend to be sustainable and you’ll gain it back.

Do you drink soda/beer? Quitting that will shed 15-20 alone.

This. I’ve lost about 45 pounds over the past 4-5 years by increasing my exercise amount and changing my diet, but if I stopped drinking beer i’d probably be another 20 pounds lighter.

This. He needs to be thinking more along the lines of 20lbs over the course of a year.

Crashing won’t work in the long run. If you want to though run 45 min a day and eat small portions of food.

If you have a family history of diabetes you should concentrate on building “white muscle” after you slim down an bit. The more muscle you have the less insulin resistance as well.
Fuck the numbers if you are concerned with the ‘beetus.

Lifestyle change. Get MyFitnessPal, log your inputs, and exercise. No need to go crazy. I lost 30 lbs in about 60 days this year. I was over eating like crazy. A lot of healthy foods are only healthy in moderation and what your brain thinks is moderation is wrong.
I also started driving Soylent daily for 2 meals per day.

This is not your topic, but I heard an EB Mustang today with a sick blow-off valve. You need one of those, because it’s sick.
Also, you are hardly fat. I’m at 200 and I’m fat.

Honestly, a lot of people can lose weight by literally just eating less food. Especially if you have a physical job, or walk around at all. Weight loss is simply- intake calories>calories burned = fat, intake calories 1
Replace crappy meals with salads and run 3 times a week. That will roast some lbs 0
Yep. I had to swap my math around. I’ve never had a very physical job. It’s all desk work. 1
I wash dishes at the most busy pizza place in Indianapolis. So I get a pretty good workout. 0
Same here regarding the beer. But hey, I gotta offset the exercise somehow ;) 1
I’m about to go hog-ass wild. No restrictions this time. I’ve that app and MapMyRun, and I’m gonna weigh and log and plan anything and everything I eat. 0
I don’t drink either. 1
I’m about to roast lbs like a pre-smog motor roasts petrol. 0
Blow off valves annoy me. And I’m 170lbs and fat. 1
mmmm, roast!!! 0
is it around your midsection (visceral fat/”beer belly”) or just general body fat? the latter is a lot easier to lose. 0
Exactly. On the plus side, I very, very rarely drink soda. 0
Midsection primarily. 0
Realistically to lose 20 lbs and look in shape your looking at 4 to 5 months. I use weight wathers and got back to my highschool (40lbs loss in 13 months). Cardio and portion control are your friend. If you lose 10 lbs by Christmas you’ll look much different then if you crash diet. 0
I can do it in much faster and efficient time than 4-5 months. That’s unacceptable to me. I’m clamping down on all portions and doing all the cardio and HIIT I can now. No more laziness, and no more rest. 1
Oh I know it can be done, it’s just very hard to keep it off, bodies don’t like immediate change and post diet will go back to the caloric intake it craves. Weight-loss is a long mans game if you want to keep it off. 1
I had lost 20 lbs in 2.5 months, then gained 7 back due to stress from my MIL passing away (and the comfort food that comes along with mourning). As of this morning, I am back down 20 lbs. Had an egg white omelet with spinach, pico, and a little cheese for breakfast, a dry salad with turkey for lunch. About to guzzle a protein shake for a mid afternoon snack, and then a light dinner. I can’t exercise until I lose just a few more pounds because of a back injury/surgery I had a couple of years ago, but if you walk (NOT RUN) for an hour at a brisk pace every day, focus on caloric restrictions, and cut carbs/sugar/grains out of your diet, you’ll be able to do it. Kick ass, take names. 0
Unless you’ve become bulbous since I met you, you aren’t really fat. You just gotta get fit, not skinny.

I’m gonna get skinny and fit all in one. 1
ah. well, cutting back on empty carbs will help there. You don’t have to go full-on Atkins*, but limiting stuff like bread, soda/pop (you’ve already said you don’t drink it, just including it for completeness) and high-GI starches like potatoes will help you there. get the sugar and starch out of your diet. those are what make you fat. The old USDA food pyramid was a crock of shit and one of the worst things foisted on the public. The other worst thing was when Ancel Keys used flawed studies to vilify natural fats, which led to us using hydrogenated oils (trans fats) which were way WAY worse. eat lots of vegetables, some meat (unless you’re vegetarian/vegan, then find your complete proteins elsewhere) and nuts/legumes, and limit grains, potatoes, chips/crackers/junk food and sugars. about 10 years ago, I was 220 lbs, and at 5' 7" that meant I was quite large. doing controlled-carb I got down to 155 in a year and a half. in the meantime I managed to creep back up to 180 and got myself back down to 155. I’m at about 165 now, with no perceivable gut. the fat I have put back on is all subcutaneous (under skin) fat, but that’s largely because I love craft beer too much. changing your diet (as in permanently changing what and how you eat) will do more for weight loss than exercise, but exercise is still important. In the warmer months I bike as much as I can, and in the winter (thanks to the UAW-negotiated free fitness center) I stationary bike and lift weights. Since you’re going to Larry Tech, make use of the Ridler Field House. 0
Bulletproof diet my friend. 1
Healthy weight loss is 1 to 2 lbs per week. 20 lbs, 10 weeks (max) I’m not saying you can’t do it in 6-8 weeks Just be mindful of what could be excessive and that losing weight too quickly can cause other problems Plus if you’re losing in a targeted area (say the gut) you want to give your skin a chance to adjust to the weight loss 0
This is a very well written description of the scenario. I’m doing the same thing. I started at about 217 in January of this year and I’m the same 5'7". 205 as of this morning, but I took a lot of the summer off exercise wise due to a shoulder injury (man, I couldn’t even run). I had been holding steady around 208. Got back in gear on the treadmill a week and a half ago and already went from a 12 minute mile back down to a 9:35 this morning. I had went from 205 all the way down to 168 I believe, but then my son was born and everything went to hell (about 3.75 years ago). There’s snacks in the house now and more responsibilities after work which was my work out time. So I started running before work. I HATE WAKING UP EARLY. So this is hard, very hard. but I’ve now done 8 business days of pre-work running/exercising and lost 3 pounds in that time (I’ve adjusted the diet some too). I’m hoping that habit forming 2-3 weeks will come soon and it’ll be natural to get up for a run. I want to be under 200 by November 17th, I go visit family that week and I really want that god damn 2 to go away. 1
nah just get ripped. skinnier doesn’t do anything. Weight is just a random number if you’re in great shape, it means nothing.
